  2014 Calendar of Events

The following are Khnemu Studio events:

Co-Exist by Cat Stasevich
Exhibit August 1st-31st
Cat has come to her subject matter from a love of the countryside and rural life.  Animals of any sort have always fascinated her, but birds have held a special place since she became a 'mother' to chickens at the age of eleven.  Through them, she has been introduced to an ancient alliance between human and animal that allowed our ancestors and their first domesticated creatures to flourish.

The combination of functionality and decoration in her vessels is a mirror of our natural world, where beauty and practicality combine.  The atmospheric variation from wood firing provides the environment for the inhabitants of her work.  Often unpredictable, the ash and flashing become murky waters and foggy haze, which obscure and reveal the inhabitants of this world.

Finding Neverland with Chandra DeBuse

Hands on visiting artist workshop Sat-Sun, Sept 27-28
Cost:  $100 materials included
$40 non-refundable deposit, remainder due 30 days prior to event

In this hands-on workshop, Chandra will share how she designs playful pottery forms using simple materials, such as plywood and craft foam through both handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques.  Students will learn to energize the clay surface through freehand drawing, direct image transfer, inlay, sgraffito, and the use of slip, wax, and underglaze to create a layered and colorful surface.  The emphasis will be on learning and experimentation in the building and decorating stages.
Although the techniques and discussion will be focused on pottery, the workshop will be valuable for any student striving to develop a more cohesive relationship between form and surface in their own clay work.

 Play with Clay -

$25 per person. Advance reservations required. Have you ever wondered what it is like to create pottery on the wheel? This two-hour mini class is perfect for those who would like an to acquaint themselves with the medium of clay....or can be used as a means to possibly improve throwing techniques if already experienced in clay. Instruction, materials and tools included. Due to the nature of the process it is not feasible to bring home your work created during this one-time class (arrangements for work can be made with larger groups). Adults only please, unless afamily or group of 4 or more reserves the day. Please dress to get dirty.

Are you tired of glazes running and sticking to a shelf.   Try making some wading using 1/2 EPK and 1/2 Alumina Hydrate.    Mix into a paste and place under the piece to hold it up from the shelf.
This may save your piece if you have runny glazes, which can be unpredictable.

Wood fired and sgrafitto mugs by Cat Stasevich

              $45 each

Grilled Peached with Gorgonzola and Peppered Sauce.
The ingredients here are most unlikely, but amazingly delightful when combined. You can substitute any cheese you like for the blue cheese....but trust me, it is awesome the way it is!

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup good quality balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground rose or other peppercorns
  • 2 large fresh freestone peaches or nectarines, unpeeled, halved and pitted
  • 2 to 3 ounces Gorgonzola cheese, crumbled

Directions

1. Early in the day, simmer balsamic vinegar in a small non-reactive saucepan with sugar and pepper until reduced by about half and slightly thickened for a glaze.
2. Preheat grill to medium-high or 350 to 400 F. if not already hot.
3. Place peach halves on grill, cut side down, and grill about 5 minutes or until flesh has slightly charred.
4. Brush top sides with glaze and cook 1 to 2 minutes.
5. Turn, brush with glaze and cook another 2 to 3 minutes.
6. Transfer to individual serving dishes and spoon any remaining glaze of tops.
7. Serve with crumbled cheese on top.
